Heritage Home closing Drexel Heritage plant in Morganton, N.C.
2014.06.06
Heritage Home Group, the parent company of Thomasville, Broyhill, Henredon, Drexel Heritage and other well-known industry brands, is closing its Drexel Heritage plant here, a move that will affect 87 jobs.
The company notified the N.C. Department of Commerce of the closing on May 30. In the notice, it said the closure is expected to be completed by July 31, which gives the 60-day notification period required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act relating to closings affecting 50 or more workers.
The company said the closure will be permanent and that no employees will be retained for the operations, located at 410 Hogan St. in Morganton.
In the letter to the DOC’s Rapid Response Team Manager Russell Doles, Heritage Home Group President and CEO Ira Glazer said that business circumstances were forcing the company to close the plant.
This is the third major layoff the company has announced in North Carolina this year. In January, it said it was closing its Thomasville plant, which affected 84 workers and, in March, it announced it was closing its Pearson upholstery plant in High Point, a move affecting 86 workers.
The company also revealed earlier this year it planned to close its Broyhill Home Collections showrooms in Blowing Rock, Hickory and Granite Falls.
However, the company also is planning to add jobs in North Carolina. Earlier this spring, it revealed it planned to relocate its headquarters operations in the St. Louis area to the High Point area. While that would affect 157 jobs in St. Louis, the company said at the time that 26 of these employees would be given jobs at the new headquarters location.
